In January 1994 a small group of musicians met in the Pawnee City High School bandroom to form what is now the Southeast Nebraska Community Band.  The had come in answer to a newspaper ad by Linda Hodges about starting a comunity band.  The original members included Doug and Mindy Phillips, Kay Farwell, Jan Vetrovsky, Carol Farwell, Lyanna Inglis, Susan Sqickle, Shari Karjala, Linda Hodges, Charlie Scott, Mike Awe, Betty Curtis and Jason Hall.  It was an auspicious beginning since most people hadn't played their instruments for years.  However, by summer the group had grown both in numbers and ability.  From that humble beginning, the Band now boasts 60 members and an annual concert schedule of 18-20 concerts.  As our group grew so did our costs for better music, more percussion instruments, uniforms and a trailer in which to move all of our chairs, music stands and equipment.  We now have 2 major fund raisers each year - our July Backyard Festival and the ever popular Afternoon of Music cruise aboard the Spirit of Brownville.

There have been six people who gave of their time and talent to direct this group:  Doug Phillips, Andrew Brase, Cody Collins, Susan Zwickle, John Furrow and Tom Osborne, the current director.  Other members of the group have filled in at concerts when a director was unable to be there for some unforseen reason.

The band has appeared in 190 public performances during their first 14 seasons.  They have performed from Beatrice, NE east to Hamburg, IA; from Omaha, NE south to St. Joseph, MO and many points in between.  Members come brom all over southeast Nebraska.  They range in age from high school students to senior citizens.  There are eight members of the Band who have been there since the first season:  Kay Farwell, Jan Vetrovsky, Shari Karjala, Linda Hodges, Charlie Scott, Laura Turnbull, Polly Clark and Randy Purdy.

The band practices every Monday night, 7:30 p.m., at a high school band room in one of the area communities.  We are always happy to have new members join our group.  If you are interested in becoming part of our band, please call one of our booking co-ordinators or talk to one of our band members.  No audition is required and arrangements can be made if you need to borrow an instrument.

Concert Booking Time for the SNCB 2009

SNCB can play a variety of music for your entertainment with concert band quality.  The cost is a $200.00 donation which helps with music and miscellaneous expenses.  The travel expense for concerts is borne by individual musicians, therein representing a real bargain for you.  For appearances we book, we require two things:  1)  Location of concert will be in a comfortable setting.  If outside, reasonable shade for both band members and the listening audience.  2)  Advertising.  If the band is booked for your entertainment, all advertising, newspaper, posters, flyers, etc of the event must include date and time of the band concert.  We do have a following which will help ensure the success of your event.  You can contact one of our booking agents for further information:  Charlie Scott 402-335-3275 or Holly Siske 402-839-5655.
